Etsu Egami (born in 1994 in Chiba) is a young artist who has attracted a great deal of international attention, from Japan and China to the US and Europe.
Using her experiences abroad, she produces work with the theme of communication, and in recent years has pursued the possibilities of painterly expression in the form of portraiture while questioning the core essence behind it.
Positioned in the present where issues have been revealed in various social and economic systems, Egami attempts to face the way Japan has modernized itself through her artistic expression.
This exhibition deals with modern Western-style painters that Egami respects, such as Takahashi Yuichi, Asai Chu, Kuroda Seiki, Fujishima Takeji, Kishida Ryusei, Koide Narashige, Umehara Ryuzaburo, Yasui Sotaro, and Fujita Tsuguharu, and also the artists who significantly influenced modern Western painting in Japan, like van Gogh and Renoir.
After the many transcendental conversations between Egami and the modern painters, what kind of painterly horizons will she show us? The collaboration exhibition will reveal them through 55 pieces of her latest work and 11 pieces from the museum collection.
